A record 97 million votes were cast overall, 23 million more than American Idol’s previous high. In the end, Cook won by a relatively wide margin, 56% to 44%, or 12 million votes.

Simon Cowell apologizes to David Cook at Idol finale
LOS ANGELES – Did Simon Cowell know David Cook would win? Or was he, for once, just being nice?
Right before host Ryan Seacrest announced Cook as the next “American Idol,” Cowell issued an uncharacteristic apology to the sincere 25-year-old rocker for skewering him during Tuesday’s final performance show. The British judge went so far as to say that the remarks he made the night before to the future “Idol” winner were “verging on disrespectful.”
“When I went back home and watched it, it wasn’t quite so clear cut as we called it,” he said to the final two.
Cowell congratulated and praised both Cook and runner-up David Archuleta, the smiley 17-year-old crooner from Murray, Utah. Cowell even revealed that “for the first time ever, I don’t really care who wins.” Such comments came as a surprise to many after Cowell heaped huge amounts of praise on Archuleta and said he won the competition by a “knockout.”

If you review his song choice on the previous round, David Cook songs made a huge impact to the audience BUT both DAVIDS posses unique talents so they are both winners!!!!

american idol has given justice to the rockers this year.after a sorry excuse to Chris Daughtry two years ago, and selecting that old-looking guy taylor hicks. truly america got it wrong. but not this time. america voted wisely.

Kaelin cited the producers telling Archuleta to sing “Longer” at a slower tempo than he rehearsed with, giving David Cook the song “I Don’t Wanna Miss a Thing” (a song that had been slated for Archuleta two weeks prior), and disallowing Syesha Mercado (but allowing Cook) the use of strings for her song.
