Former Senate President Jovito R. Salonga has been awarded as one of the seven winners of Asia’s version of the Nobel Prize, 2007 Ramon Magsaysay Award.

Salonga won the award for Government Service for “the exemplary integrity and substance of his long public career in service to democracy and good government in the Philippines.”

Other awardees are:

  1. Kim Sun-tae from Korea, for Public Service
  2. Mahathir Pun from Nepal, for Community Leadership
  3. Tang Kiyang from China, for Peace and International Understanding
  4. Palagummi Sainath from India, for Journalism, Literature, and Creative Communication Arts
  5. Chen Guangcheng from China, for Emergent Leadership
  6. Chung To from China, for Emergent Leadership

Ramon Magsaysay Award is Asia’s highest honor and was established in 1957. This event commemorates the memory and leadership of Philippines’ third President and is given every year to individuals or organizations in Asia who manifest the same sense of selfless service that rules the life of the late and beloved Filipino leader.
