hindi hamak na kabastos-bastos yung pagisingit ng gma7 ng commercial ng PAL habang pinapatugtog ang Lupang Hinirang, di ba? napaka-epokrito nung spokesperson ng National Historical Institute at kung anu-ano ang pinagsasabi about Martin’s rendition.

Sometime in the mid 80’s after People Power, a group of artists came up with their version of the Philippine National Anthem ala “We Are the World.” It drew so much criticism as it was considered a desecration of the National Anthem. Instead of the focus being on the national anthem and what it represented, it became a vehicle for all these top singers to show off their artistic talents trying to outdo each other.
Martin Nievera was already around that time and he should have remembered that. What was horrible about Martin’s rendition was he was trying to show off himself, bring the focus to him rather than represent the Philippines and bring dignity to what our anthem represents – an embodiment of our culture and history. Instead he misuses artistic license and desecrates the song. The last portion wherein he alters the melodic line and does that high note was in very bad taste. That is not how the National Anthem goes. That is not its melody. That is not how it is sung. And sadly, the arrangement was in very poor taste.
Musically it was a disaster.
And in terms of representing the Philippines, it was a sacrilege.
On another note, is he Filipino or American?

As a Pinoy musician, I am not proud of Martin’s performance. The last note is off. It lacks power etc. I heard other Filipino-American perform better than that.

Ryan Cayabyab is right. If Mr. Nievera had listened to his advice not to fool around with our National Anthem, he would not get into trouble. The Inquirer reported that despite Mr. Cayabyab’s advice, Mr. Nievera said he would go through with his plan because he would be “doing it for the country.”

Bert and Carol Nievera formally charged for Country Waffles scam at DOJ (Feb 6 – 2:01 pm)

Charges of estafa, bouncing checks and violation of the securities code were slapped by the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) yesterday against Bert Nievera and wife Carol for their involvement in the ”Country Waffles” scam before the Department of Justice (DOJ).
It was learned that the charges were brought about by a complaint of investor Monina Nepomuceno who told the NBI that they lost some P 19 million in investments to the chain directors of the now defunct restaurants.
She calimed that the Nieveras’ fled the country as soon as they found out that another branch of the ”Country Waffles” restaurant was to open in Alabang, Muntinlupa City.
Nepomuceno said that Bert (Nievera) called him last on Dec. 23 but did not call the next day. ”He promised to call me the next day. When he didn’t call, I became worried,” Nepumuceno narrates.
She told the NBI that Bert even duped her into believing that the couple left the country to get a big loan for the restaurant. ”Even when they were defaulting on their payments, Bert would pacify me. I am not angry at them but they should come back,” she explains further.
Nepumuceno also added that she learned that Nievera was even supposedly scheduled to sing at the opening of their new branch in Alabang Muntinlupa on Dec. 24. This was coincided with Carol Nievra’s grandson’s birthday.
The NBI sent the second and then the final subpoenas and four other incorporators for the syndicated-estafa complaint lodged against them sometime last month.
