ABS- CBN BROADCASTING NETWORK COMMERCIAL RATE IS HIGHER THAN ITS COMPETITOR GMA NETWORK
According to Philippine Advertisers Association, the noontime block rate of ABS-CBN Broadcasting Network is costing 120, 000 Pesos per 10 seconds commercial load while GMA Network only rate 80, 000 Pesos per 10 seconds commercial.
The Primetime of ABS-CBN commercial block is worth 160,000 Pesos per 10 seconds while GMA is 120, 000 Pesos.
So, ABS-CBN is expensive than GMA because of its quality shows and at present advertisers do not rely on ratings because of some uncertainty of credibilty conducted by survey company.
The advertisers in the Philippines spent billion of pesos through print ad, radio and television.

Lehman Bros, Lopez Bros
Right now, the Lopez empire is teetering, evolving into a lemon like Lehman, for two key reasons: over-borrowing beyond financial capacity, and key foreign partners saying goodbye.
The Lopezes have a half-billion dollars in loans maturing in November. There are other loans maturing later. No one really knows how large the exposure is. It all began with white elephants Bayantel and Maynilad. In Bayantel, the Lopezes were saved by bankruptcy protection. They returned Maynilad to the government, which was overly generous by writing off its staggering debt of $200 million. This was in January 2007 when the Lopezes still had a love affair with government. If this happened after they broke off, the government could perhaps have easily forced the Lopezes to convert their debt into government equity in Meralco, easing the burden on Winston Garcia of GSIS on takeover moves. Of course, a utility in government hands can be as much an evil as in the Lopezes’ hands.
When the love affair fizzled, the Lopezes took drastic moves in panic over Winston breathing down their necks. To consolidate its hold on Meralco, the Lopez parent firm First Philippine Holdings, Inc. (FPHI) bought off its Spanish partner Union Fenosa for $250 million and Meralco Pension Fund for $200 million. The empire can lose everything BUT Meralco, the key profit center.
If the folly of Hitler was to create a war on two fronts by attacking Russia, the folly of the Lopezes was in going into the big league of power generation. Actually, power generation is good business in the Philippines because your income is guaranteed by the government, but you need to have the initial huge capital. FPHI is relatively new in the power generation game although it has big-time foreign partners. It is not the partnership, though, but the financial capability that matters. The Lopezes are veterans in power distribution but not in power generation. One is like the PBA and the other the NBA. You cannot play with Shaq if you are 5’10″ tall and weigh a measly 200 pounds.
The loss of foreign partners was the coup de grace that is finally bringing the Lopez house down. With ambitions to build a geothermal plant in Mt. Kanlaon, Red Vulcan, owned by FPHI’s First Gen Corp., forged a deal with a geothermal developer from Iceland, Reykjavik Energy and its subsidiary Spalmare Holding, to buy the government’s PNOC-EDC, which held the rights in Mt. Kanlaon. The Icelanders backed out of their 40% stake in Red Vulcan “for undisclosed reasons.” But you can make a guess that they started discerning financial incongruities.
Red Vulcan ended up paying $1.4 billion for PNOC-EDC. The government wrote off Maynilad debts of $200 million but got to sell PNOC-EDC for $1.4 million. Without foreign partners, FPHI was forced to borrow from DBP, Land Bank, and Henry Sy’s BDO. Poor Henry, he did not even know what hit him. If the DBP and Land Bank loans mature, this could mean take-over time for government. The empire could begin to crumble. Red Vulcan got bridge loans from two foreign banks worth $290 million, which matures in November. Red Vulcan also got unsecured dollar loans of $155 million from local banks. Hence, the grand total due in November is $445 million. The depreciation of the peso against the dollar bloated this grand total to P1.7 billion, excluding interests. EDC stocks fell by 47%, plunging the worth of Red Vulcan shares from P59 billion to P14 billion.
On top of these financial woes, Red Vulcan’s PNOC-EDC is opposed by a host of local and national environmentalists. Realizing that the geothermal source is beneath the protected Mt. Kanlaon National Park, PNOC-EDC pulled strings to get an exemption to dig right at the edge of the park. It was digging sideways to reach the geothermal source underneath the protected park. This is a risky undertaking. No one has done this before and it is not known what will happen. The legal question is — is everything underneath a protected park also protected? There is a chance the Mt. Kanlaon caper will fizzle out.
The Lopezes then went into a panic garage sale to pay for the maturing loans. Manny Pangilinan’s Metro Pacific, which bought Maynilad at a bargain price of $450 million together with DMCI Holdings, also bought the 67% stake of the Lopezes in the NLEX franchise of the Manila North Tollway Corp. (MNTC) for a miserly $300 million or P12 billion. Manny is the wise investor who visits garage sales for cheap items. Next on the garage sale list was the Lopezes’ 60% stake in First Gen Hydro, which is going for another bargain price of $105 million or P4.2 billion. These sales would hopefully be enough to pay for the loans.
To avoid possible government takeover, FPHI could turn to its foreign partners Intergen (US) and British Gas (UK) to buy its debts for equity, if the law on foreign equity limit will allow it. But either way, the empire will lose some fat. As of end 2007, audited financial statements reveal the Lopez Brothers’ total current liabilities of P120.7 billion, broken down into 1) Meralco P49.9 billion, 2) FPHI P40.7 billion, and 3) Red Vulcan Holdings P30.1 billion. This does not include figures for 2008.

January – June 2008 ADS REVENUE
ABS-CBN – 6.339 Billion
GME7 – 5.518 Billion

ABS-CBN & GMA: ‘Class’ & ‘Masa’
‘CLASS’ & ‘MASA’ – A showbiz authority notes that while GMA is way, way ahead of ABS-CBN in the primetime race, both networks are “fully loaded,” meaning overflowing with commercials. One would expect GMA to have much more sponsors than ABS-CBN, yet they’re about even in advertisements.
Why is this so?
The showbiz authority in reference says it’s because advertisers are now considering not only the number of viewers, but quality of shows as well. GMA primetime programs may have the number, large viewership, but ABS-CBN has the quality, the high production values and the technical craftsmanship.
Think of ABS-CBN’s ‘Lobo’ and ‘Maligno’ and ‘Maalaala Mo Kaya,’ the showbiz authority continues. Think of GMA’s ‘Joaquin Bordado’ and ‘Dyesebel’ and ‘Babangon Ako at Dudurugin Kita.’ Compare and see the difference.
Seems that ABS-CBN has the limited A & B market, while GMA has captured the much bigger C, D, & E viewers. And it tells in the ratings. Advertisers target both audiences. Which explains why both channels are “fully loaded.”
A question of “Class” & “Masa.”.!

Imbiyerna kina Dindong Dantes at Marian Rivera ang staff ng “Walang Tulugan with The Master Showman.”

Gano’n?

Ibang sitwasyon `yon!
Naku, dapat ding mag-isip-sip ni Kyla, huh!
anong say ko!? : pano ba naman eh nakatambak kayo jan sa SOP wala kayong concert ni wala kayong out of town show haha pano di ka malalaos isa lang show mo tsk! tsk!

The “SCIENCE” Behind the ABS-CBN Logo
If you think that ABS-CBN has no relationship in the field of science, you’re WRONG!
If you can see the ABS-CBN logo carefully, you can see the three colored rings: the red ring, the green ring and the blue ring, is also the color of the colored cathode-ray tubes used in colored television, as well as in the light spectrum. Well, that’s Physics and Electronics…
Get it?
Now, you have now an idea in what is the connection between ABS-CBN Logo and Science…!

ABS-CBN to comply with KBP’s 18-min per hour ad rule
ABS-CBN Broadcasting Corporation on Friday declared its full support for the Kapisanan ng mga Broadkaster ng Pilipinas’ (KBP) call for broadcast networks to strictly abide by the KBP rule limiting the commercial load of programs to a maximum of 18 minutes per hour.
Bong Osorio, head of ABS-CBN Corporate Communications, said the Kapamilya network is committed to following KBP’s commercial load limit in order to give better value to our advertisers and viewers.
He pointed out two reasons why adhering to the KBP’s 18-minute per hour advertising rule is important.
“First, the limit safeguards the public from possible abuse by broadcast organizations in shortening programs to accommodate more airtime for commercial loads. Sacrificing program content for profit is doing a disservice to the public,” he said.
“Second, the cap prevents broadcast stations from flooding the market with excessive commercials. Limiting the number of TV and radio spots lessen the advertising clutter; thereby, making the ads more effective,” he added.
According to Osorio, ABS-CBN will comply with the commercial load limit despite the huge demand for ad placement reservations in our programs.
“As a long-standing member of the KBP, we are committed to the principle of self-regulation. We thank the advertisers for their trust and support in our programs and the public for their continued and unwavering patronage,” he said.
The KBP recently issued a statement announcing that it will strictly implement the 18-minute per hour advertising rule among its member TV networks. Its officials said the move will promote public interest by preventing advertising clutter.
THE TRUTH

The advertisers in the Philippines spent billion of pesos through print ad, radio and television.!

GMA 7 : The Colorum Television Station
TODAPHIL – Tricycle Operators and Drivers Association of the Philippines

This does not include figures for 2008.

i still have many questions regarding the said article on philstar early this morning…
1.as far as i know…they are not the one who won the terrestrial award in asian awards for television…
2.how can they state of the art if they are not in digital tv format….
3.if they have made a studio that they say is state of the art….isn’t that they should have made their artist center a real artist center that caters and makes an artist not just a starlet…they should also probably replace their mentors on their artist center, so that their so called artists won’t be a laughing stock because of their poor acting performance…
4. they also put up a second international channel….is this because myx has its own tv channel in north america….
5. they are not the first ones to put up live tv streamings on the internet…it was already done by abs- cbn for pbb….and do they thought that it would just be a waist of money because most people here do not watch tv shows on the internet…if they put it up for the filipinos abroad….it should have been like the abs cbn’s…they should be the one who will follow the sched of their viewers because they are the ones who need it…tlets just say that an ofw would like to watch eat bulaga in the net because he is not a pinoytv subscriber, so he will just watch over the net…if the show airs 12 pm on the net….how can he watch if he is the office that doesn’t allow such websites because it slows down the speed of the net….

I’ve been reading different comments about Angel Locsin and Marian Rivera and a lot more about the transfer of GMA artists to ABS and vice versa. Here are the things that I have noted and the way I see it:
(1) People keep saying that if an artist transferred from ABS to GMA nagiging sikat. And the reason they are saying is because hindi sila kaya pasikatin ng ABS at ang GMA ang may capacity na pasikatin sila. Well, let me say my piece. The reason kung bakit sumisikat ang mga artista na lumilipat sa GMA is not because ABS is not capable and GMA is the one who has the ability to make them sikat. The only reason behind is simply because ang dami ng magagaling na artista sa ABS and those people na lumipat sa GMA are those artista na ndi kayang makipagsabayan sa talagang mahuhusay ng artista ng ABS. Second, it’s not because din magaling ang GMA magpasikat ng artista but simply because wala nman maciadong artista sa GMA so and mejo sikat or not sikat at all na artista ng ABS, paglipat sa GMA, sumisikat…kze wala nmang sila maciadong ka kompetensya
(2) People are saying na ang mga sikat na artista ng ABS are galing lahat sa GMA and they are giving the credit to GMA network. Here’s my piece..I do acknowledge that those artists na galing ng GMA has the talents kaya lang since GMA can’t make their career bloom…mas magaling talaga magpasikat ang ABS ng mga artistang may talents…Anne Curtis, Toni Gonzaga and Marielle are all from GMA but I think sa ABS sila na develop to be good in their own forte.
(3) People are saying na pina pirate ng ABS ang mga sikat na artista ng GMA which I think is not really the case…Angel Locsin transferred to ABS and acknowledged the fact na sila ng manager nia ang lumapit sa ABS. Well, dun sa mga nagsasabing lumipat cia because of the TF..I would think that is really one of the reasons among the so many reasons she has…and I believe her when she said na one of her reasons is gus2 nia ma acknowledge ung pagiging artista nia by at least getting an acting award…She’s been with GMA for quite long pero ndi un nabigay ng GMA sa kanya…dami niang projects and movies na blockbuster but nothing brought her any award…
(4) People are saying that Angel Locsin is Laos na dahil wala na ciang soap sa ABS while Marian is so sikat dahil ndi cia nawawalan ng soap sa GMA…the fact na walang soap si angel ngayon sa ABS will not support the conclusion na laos na cia….dahil if you are watching ABS, papalit palit talaga sila ng artista para ndi nasasawa ang tao…and another thing sa dami ng magagaling na artista sa ABS pag binigyan nila un lahat ng soap ng sabay sabay then baka maghapon magdamag puro teleserye na lang ang palabas ng ABS. On the other hand, I agree na sikat si Marian…but I also believe na sikat cia dahil cia lang nman ang may maraming exposure from GMA. So if you are a fan of GMA since ang mga Filipino nman is maka network and ndi artista, then you will of course watch Marian dahil wala nman ng iba…and I don’t think comparing the number of soap of Angel and Marian will measure their kasikatan….dahil si Marian ndi talaga mwawalan ng soap sa GMA dahil konti lang sila don…GMA can’t take the risk of getting Marian out of the bright light…sino nman ipapalit nila db? No option nman din sila….and as I have noticed, GMA is not willing to take the risk na pagpalit palitin ang partners nila…kung alin ung kumita…sila na lang ng sila…I watched both Angel and Marian movies…in terms of acting, I think mas mgaling lang ng konti si Angal kai Marian…that is nung asa GMA pa si Angel…but when she transferred to ABS…I don’t think Marian is still comparable to Angel when it comes to acting…sobrang na develop si Angel sa ABS….she has more to offer….
(5) And finally…we are free to write our comments here so don’t take these things against me….

GMA commercial overloading cannot defeat ABS-CBN Airtime Revenues
GMA 7 cannot hide the fact that even if they can overload commercials to more than 18 minutes per hour, eh mas kumita pa ang ABS-CBN sa first quarter ng 2008. Hindi ba nakakapagtaka? Hmmm…Kung tunay na magaling ang network na GMA, it should double or triple the revenue that ABS-CBN is getting on airtime ads. But alam ba ninyo bakit hindi nagkaganoon? Kasi puro propaganda lang ang No. 1 sila. Kasi di ba, if advertisers truly believe GMA 7’s lies that No. 1 sila, dapat advertisers should buy airtime ads sa GMA 7 like crazy. Pero dahil sa Lobo, My Girl, Sining bee, Wheel of Fortune etc. Sira ang diskarte na overloading ng GMA 7
cannot fool advertisers. They have a lot of money but spend it wisely. They have a lot of money, but they do not just spend it based on stupid propaganda. They do their own random surveys, and when they do, the truth comes out. ABS-CBN never left No. 1 kahit sa Metro Manila. Kung quality programming lang ang laban, its not even a question. GMA 7 doesnt have what it takes to maintain the leadership position. its all smoke and mirrors. Sino linoko nila? advertisers put their money where they will be effective. Kung ganon, even at 18 minutes, pinagsisiksikan nila sarili nila sa various ABS-CBN programs kasi effective.
Scenario No. 1
GMA 7 cannot keep pace with ads revenue generated of ABS-CBN, kahit overloading. So ibig sabihin, they have to do drastic tactics. Expect more smear campaigns and everything but the kitchen sink thrown just to get attention.
Sceneraio No. 2
If KBP takes them back, patay sila. babagsak ang revenue nila kasi kahit nga sa overloading, di nila kaya airtime revenue ng GMA7, what more kung 18 minutes per hour ang laban. Babagsak sales nila. So unlikely they will go back at this time. Sirang sira sila sa KBP with their self regulation policy.
Scenario 3
They blatantly disrespect KBP, the organization that is all encompasssing. lahat ng media ay member nito except sila. They should cease operating kasi this is just not a club where you can get out. It is a regulating body to ensure that the consumer is protected agains overloading of ads and making sure other channels get airtime ads as well. Biruin mo, swapang na, nagmamatigas pa.
GMA 7 is in a hole. A big hole. Parang ENRON. They say everything is fine but deep inside, its an abyss of kapalpakan and mistakes. Its hard to run a TV station, but by golly, ABS-CBN has run it well. It may have a few problems management wise, like all companies do. But they have the balls to do run it. No ifs and butts, they run it well. ABS-CBN managment people who may be business sharks but has the intellectual capacity to be helpful or even playful individuals if the situation is needed.
GMA Propaganda lang pla na no.1 sila

Television Ad Clutter in the Philippines
Last Thursday night I had a chance to watch Ms. Cheche Lazaro’s “Media in Focus” show on the ABS-CBN News Channel (ANC). It is an intellectual talk show on everything and anything about media in the Philippines.
The episode was interesting. It was about the imposition of the 18 minute per hour ad load for all the members of the Kapisanan ng mga Broadcaster ng Pilipinas (Association of Philippine Broadcasters) or the KBP.
The show had an interesting panel of guests and resource persons.
The first guest was Ms. Maloli Espinsa, who is the current President of the KBP. She talked about the stricter implementation of the load limit.
She said that the 18 minute rule is one of the higest in the region. [I did some research on Wikipedia and found out that 18 minutes was also the standard in US television.]
Asked about why 18 minutes, Ms. Espinosa said it was the optimal amount that will be quitable to the broadcaster, the advertisers and the viewers (in terms of clutter).
The penalty for members who are found guilty of violating the rule is 120% of the ad revenue in excess of 18 minutes.
Two years ago, the rule as relaxed because KBP members were at a commercial dissadvantage to those who are non-members of the KBP, namely GMA Network, Inc. (GMA-7).
Apprently, GMA-7 withdrew from the KBP last August 2003. Some people say that GMA quit the KBP because it was found guilty of violation to the ad load limit and was supposed to be heavily fined. [I now understand why the channel is full of ads and ever extends the time slots of its shows.] [Read news about GMA leaving the KBP here.]
By the way, Che-che Lazaro said that her show tried to invite a representative from GMA Network but they declined the invitation.
You might think, that there’s nothing wrong with a network having too many ads. You may say that it just means that a tv network is more popuar among viewers.
However, more ads is not good after all. Vivian Tin, ABS-CBN’s vice-president for research and business development said that too much clutter in TV ads is not good for the viewers and the advertisers. She mentioned a study of the Philippine Association of National Advertisers (PANA) that found out that an additional two minutes of ad load leads to an eleven percent drop in ad recall.
Jones Campos, an official of PANA, seconds that in their lab study on ad clutter, proves that clutter will not make ads effective.
In my opinion, the ad load limit must be supported and strictly enforced. It is unfortunate and irresponsible that GMA-7 left the KBP just to get away with exploiting every second of advertising revenue. If GMA-7 would not want to join a self regulatory organization like the KBP the government should step in through the National Telecommunications Commission to enforce the rule among all broadcasters.
In this age of multi-tasking and multi-media, people do not just stick to one channel and loyally watch a program from start to finish. Today, the number of ad clutter means the more we can use our cellphones, switch to another channel, check e-mails, surf the internet or go to the toilet.
Wouldn’t it be better if our TV ads are lower than 18 minutes, say from six minutes below?
Advertisers should realize that what is more important is not the number of times their ad appears on TV but rather how better their brands or messages stick to the minds of the consumers.
What is more important here than making media organizations profitable is protecting the viewers of too much advertising clutter.

ABS-CBN supports cap on ad load
SOURCE: Philippine Daily Inquirer
MANILA, Philippines–ABS-CBN Broadcasting Corp. on Friday declared its full support for the Kapisanan ng mga Broadkaster ng Pilipinas’ (KBP) call for broadcast networks to strictly abide by the KBP rule limiting the commercial load of programs to 18 minutes per hour.
“The limit safeguards the public from possible abuse by broadcast organizations in shortening programs to accommodate more airtime for commercial loads,” ABS-CBN corporate communications head Bong Osorio said in a statement.
“The cap prevents broadcast stations from flooding the market with excessive commercials. Limiting the number of TV and radio spots lessen the advertising clutter; thereby, making the ads more effective,” he said.

GMA 7 refutes KBP ad load rule
By Riza T. Olchondra
Philippine Daily Inquirer
MANILA, Philippines – GMA Network, Inc. said on Wednesday that the Kapisanan ng mga Brodkaster ng Pilipinas (KBP) rule limiting the commercial load of programs to 18 minutes per hour will push commercial airtime prices up.
The network, which left the KBP in 2003, also said that the cap violates Philippine laws.
“A limitation on the supply of the very limited resource of commercial airtime would push commercial airtime prices upwards. Thus, time standard disrupts market forces that dictate supply and demand and is anti-competition,” GMA said in a statement.
Manipulative
Citing local and US laws, GMA also said that limiting the number of minutes per hour for commercials, among others, “had the actual effect of manipulating the supply of commercial television time.”
The network views the time standard “as a form of combination in restraint of trade and therefore violative of the Constitution and the Revised Penal Code.”
GMA officials could not be reached for comment regarding the network’s ad load, revenue from ads, and ad rates.
Full support
Last month, KBP member ABS-CBN declared full support for the ad load cap.
“The limit safeguards the public from possible abuse by broadcast organizations,” ABS-CBN corporate communications head Bong Osorio said in a statement.
“Limiting the number of TV and radio spots lessen the advertising clutter; thereby, making the ads more effective,” he added.
ABS-CBN head for business analysis Vivian Tin said on Tuesday that the ad load limit will not pull down the company’s ad revenue. “Last year, though KBP gave a little bit of leeway to the cap—to 20 minutes— we did not go beyond that out of respect for the audience. Between the price increase and the increase in number of minutes that’s coming out in terms of demand … we think airtime revenues will grow healthily even at 18 minutes.”
Last Tuesday, ABS-CBN announced that it is raising ad rates by 15 percent, subject to negotiation with advertisers.

Richard, muntik mag-walk out sa GMA event!
Naku, nag-walk out si Richard!

I.T.A.L.Y. opens with P281,000 ONLY!
Contrary to circulating text messages that the GMA Films love-comedy flick ITALY grossed P17 Million on its opening day, a reliable source has confirmed that the Jolina Magdangal and Dennis Trillo starrer earned only P281,000.
Yeah, you read it right. Only P281,000.
Last September 19, a mysterious text message was circulating allegedly sent from Atty. Anneete Gozon-Abrogar, GMA Films President, confirming that the film grossed P17 Million (surassing A Very Special Love which had grossed P14 Million).
The text message saya:
“GMA Films P35 million budget cruise comedy I.T.A.LY. grosses a phenomenal P17 million on its 1st day of showing. The opening day gross surpassed GMA Films’ expectation,” said Anette Gozon.
“Even surpassing the P14 million opening day gross of Star Cinema/Viva Films’ A Very Special Love. We are now at the top with the future really bright for GMA.”
My friends went to the cinema to know the real sitch…and Alas! We all saw were “bangaws” and “langaws” all over the entrance where ITALY is being shown. No queue. No lines. Just few persons who were either curios or plain dumb to even give this trash a try!

Changes were apparent in the programming of the network in 2004. The production of various shows were up to par with its rival network, ABS-CBN. Extra Challenge started to lead the game. And with launch of the telefantasya Mulawin, GMA finally gained a rating advantage in Mega Manila over ABS-CBN, officially on September 23, 2004.[16] By the end of the year, GMA was one of the most profitable companies in the country.
In 2005, GMA began broadcast of Mars Ravelo’s Darna, a classic comic book character among Filipinos which became a big hit, with its ratings being the highest ever for a pilot episode of 47.7% and the first telefantasya to hit up to 52.2%, followed by Encantadia at 47.2 percent at Mega Manila[citation needed]. Other primetime telefantasyas like Mulawin (2004) and Sugo (2005) also maintained the network’s lead in its Mega Manila ratings during the year.
In 2006, GMA maintained its primetime ratings re-formatting shows Extra Challenge and Encantadia (which was succeeded by sequels Etheria and Encantadia: Pag-ibig Hanggang Wakas), and by the localized versions of the Korean series, Stairway to Heaven, Full House, Jewel in the Palace and My Name is Kim Sam Soon.[17]
In a 2006 survey conducted by Pulse Asia, 7 out of 10 Metro Manila-based viewers find GMA Network a more credible network than rival ABS-CBN.[18] The network managed to lead in the Mega Manila and Southern Luzon demographic, which has the highest television ownership and up to 79% of advertisement spots.[19] The NUTAM was officially launched last October 16, 2006 to determine the TV ratings and audience share of local TV Programs from the different urban areas in the Philippines. This changes the television landscape and the manner in which the advertisers will allocate their TV investments to achieve cost efficiency and maximize each. With this larger geographical measurement coverage, a greater level of accountability and confidence in television as a primary advertising medium is achieved.
As of August 2007, GMA maintained its lead in Mega Manila TV ratings against rival ABS-CBN for the first half of 2007 citing Mega Manila TV ratings data from AGB-Nielsen GMA (as shown below), which resulted to a 23 percent growth in its consolidated net income to P1.13 billion in the first half of the year from P915 million in the same period last year. [20]
As a result, GMA continues to have a good run in the stock market. The network’s net income grew by 23% year-on-year to P1.126 billion in the first six months of the year. Mega Manila accounts for about 48% of total TV households. The Mega Manila and Luzon markets combined account for about 76% of the total TV households.[21] It earned P 2.3 billion in 2007.[22]
[edit] Ratings controversy
Main article: AGB Nielsen Philippine TV ratings controversy
On December 20, 2007, Judge Charito Gonzales, Quezon City Regional Trial Court Br. 80 released a temporary restraining order on TV ratings surveys based on a civil case filed by ABS-CBN Broadcasting Corporation versus AGB Nielsen Media Research Philippines. ABS-CBN accused rival GMA Network of funding bribing operations at Bacolod City, to discredit the former.[23][24] The Court further ordered ABS-CBN Broadcasting Corporation to file comment on the plea of AGB Nielsen for the alleged gathering and dissemination of television ratings data, within 5 days or until December 22.[25]
On December 21, 2007, DZMM correspondent Junrie Hidalgo reported a news story entitled AGB Nielsen, umamin sa dayaan: GMA Network, tahasang itinurong nasa likod ng dayaan (AGB Nielsen admits the cheating: GMA Network fiercely accused of being responsible of the cheating) during the program Showbiz Mismo, hosted by Cristy Fermin and Jobert Sucaldito. The news story is based on an interview of AGB Nielsen’s General Manager Maya Reforma regarding the alleged cheating.[citation needed]
In response, GMA aired a TV plug condemning the alleged biased reporting and denied the accusations of ABS-CBN. They later filed a PHP15-million civil libel suit against ABS-CBN on January 3, 2008. The respondents included Hidalgo, Fermin, Sucaldito, the station manager and news manager of DZMM and hosts, writers and executive producers of TV programs Bandila, Entertainment Live and The Buzz after the same story was aired on the mentioned programs.[26]
On January 7, 2008, the Quezon City RTC junked ABS-CBN’s suit against AGB Nielsen, saying the case was “prematurely filed” before the court.[27] Judge Charito Gonzales’ basis is the principle of mutuality of contracts, citing Article 1308 and 1196, New Civil Code of the Philippines. Also, Judge Samuel Gaerlan, QCRTC, Branch 92 issued court summons against ABS-CBN and its 15 personnel, in the January 3, 2008 P15-million damage suit by GMA Network.[28]
On January 17, 2008, Judge Gaerlan inhibited himself from the case, considering that he has a cousin working in the legal department of ABS-CBN.[29] The case was later re-raffled on January 28, 2008,[30] and the case was eventually assigned to Judge Henri Inting of Branch 95, QCRTC. Judge Inting submitted GMA’s petition for a temporary restraining order for decision.[citation needed]
On February 14, 2008, Judge Inting issued a TRO barring ABS-CBN from airing defamatory statements against GMA.[31]

ABS CBN tops Nielsen survey in 3 market segments
ABS-CBN emerged as the preferred channel among affluent Filipinos, teen-age audiences, and families of overseas Filipino workers.
This latest finding was according to the Nielsen Media Research, which conducted a survey aimed to give a clearer picture of the viewing habits of the three market segments cited.
The research and survey was administered through personal interviews around urban areas.
Nielsen described the word “affluent” as those viewers who are living in posh “gated villages” with income higher than P50, 000 a month. The teens are those who belong to the 13 to 19 age bracket, regardless of economic status, while OFW beneficiaries are those with a family member working overseas.
In data presented by the said research and survey group, ABS-CBN registered a 79.4 percent grade to emerge as the top local channel most often watched by viewers who belong to the A, B and C1 market segment. The Kapamilya network was followed by GMA-7 with 64.1 percent, while ABS-CBN’s sister station, Studio 23, came next with 25.3 percent. GMA-7’s sister network, QTV 11, and ABC 5 complete the roster with 12.2 percent and 11.0 percent, respectively.
The teens TV viewership category was also ruled by ABS-CBN with its 62.11 percent clip compared to GMA-7’s 38.6 percent.
The Lopez-owned network also collected the most viewership in the OFW families segment, registering a strong 64.0 percent as compared to GMA-7’s 49.9 percent showing. Studio 23, occupied the third spot with 3.2 percent, followed by QTV 11’s 2.6 percent and ABC 5’s 2.2 percent.
PRINT AND RADIO. Going beyond television, Philippine Daily Inquirer garnered a 28.23 percent grade to become the most favored broadsheet among readers. The Manila Bulletin trailed behind with 18.87 percent, followed closely by the Philippine Star, which registered an 18.83 percent grade.
FHM tops the list as the most widely read monthly magazine across sectors. The popular men’s magazine came away with the top plum based on the strength of its 15.70 percent performance. The number two spot belongs to Cosmopolitan with 10.23 percent while coming in at third is the entertainment magazine YES! with 6.83 percent. All three titles are from Summit Media.
Even radio stations were not spared from the survey. Just like in TV, the teens and the affluent sectors figured prominently as both favored FM over AM.
Magic 89.9 TM occupies the top spot followed by Monster Radio RX 93.1 and Love Radio 90.7
In the AM survey, dzMM emerged as the favored among the lot followed by dzBB and dzRH. ABS-CBN owns dzMM while dzBB is the AM station of GMA Network.

OMG!!! it’s really true!!!!!!
it’s really true “na mapanira ang abs-cbn fans ng sobra2x…”
i mean i stand on the neutral ground here in L.A. I both subscribe to TFC and GMA Pinoy TV. and i’m just so proud for which these projects were founded coz foreigners can also see pinoy’s versatile talents. but, i think i have to think the otherwise…
it’s so obvious that there’s a great deal of COMPETITION going on.
and it’s sad…
television networks in other countries don’t make gruesome comments against each other..sure there is still that competition in surveys and stuff but “fans” usually take it like professionals or if not just a fair and square TV viewer who looks at things positively.
we’ve got to admit that both these powerful networks are making a significant contribution to the Philippines’ economy.
i don’t believe it will give a slight help for us, fans or skeptics, to be judgmental on something. why don’t we just learn to help rather than criticize.
this holds both to ABS and GMA.
no sweat you guys. but i think we should just work on making a better and peaceful world to live in. and these network wars surely won’t help, trust me. besides, there are far greater things that we should rather put our attention to like mass destruction, pollution, crime, economic malfunction, the global crisis and so so many others!!!
you see, there are other things that need to be solved!!!
don’t you think the best thing to do is focus more on things that are eating this planet like crazy??????!!!!
come on! it sure does would not harm to make bridges and not gargantuan walls, would it?

The Philippine Movie Press Club (PMPC) has released their nominees for the 2008 Star Awards for Television and Angel Locsin received two acting nominations while Marian Rivera was snubbed.
In the Best Single Performance by an Actress category, every contenders are kapamilya stars that starred from the longest-running drama anthology “Maalaala Mo Kaya.” Angel Locsin is nominated in this category for the “Pilat” episode of MMK. She’s vying with veteran actresses Gloria Romero for “Singsing”, Susan Roces for “Basura”, Helen Gamboa for “Mesa”, Cherry Pie Picache for “Tren”. Shaina Magdayao is also nominated for the “Telebisyon” episode of the said drama anthology.
In the Best Drama Actress category, Angel Locsin is nominated for her fantaserye “Lobo.” Two other kapamilya stars are nominated in this category and they are Judy Ann Santos for Ysabella and Coney Reyes, also from the teleserye Ysabella. 3 Kapuso stars are also vying for this award and they are Dina Bonnevie for Babangon Ako’t Dudurugin Kita, Sunshine Dizon for Impostora, and Lovi Poe for Sine Novela Presents: Kaputol Ng Isang Awit.

In the Best Primetime TV Series category, only original Filipino-made series made it to the list. These shows are Lobo (ABS-CBN), Ysabella (ABS-CBN), Impostora (GMA-7), La Vendetta (GMA-7) and Joaquin Bordado (GMA-7).
