Muslims in several countries start to gear up for the holy month of Ramadan.

Ramadan

The start of Ramadan, which is the ninth and the holiest month of the Muslim calendar, is traditionally determined by the sighting of a new moon, often dividing rival Islamic countries and sects over the exact date.

Across the Middle East, Ramadan will start today, Thursday (Sept. 13), including in Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates. Libya, on the other hand is a Muslim country that does not look to the moon and based on astronomical calculations, its centre for astronomical studies declared Wednesday (Sept. 12) as the start of Ramadan in their country.

During the holy month, Muslims are required to abstain from food, drink and sex from dawn until dusk as life slips into a lower gear during the day, and activity peaks between “iftar,” the breaking of the fast at sunset, and “suhur,” the last meal of the day before sunrise.
