ABS-CBN lowers profit outlook due to falling ad revenues
11/17/2008 | 06:30 PM
Email this | Email the Editor | Print | Digg this | Add to del.icio.us MANILA, Philippines – ABS-CBN Broadcasting Corp. has cut profit expectations this year, warning that advertising revenue may be lower in 2008 and shrink in 2009.
Earnings may reach P1.4 billion this year, lower than the P1.5 billion originally projected, Rolando P. Valdueza, ABS-CBN chief financial officer, told reporters.
From January to September, profits reached P1.2 billion, P70 million shy of its full year earnings last year. Revenues for the period rose 15 percent to P16.54 billion from P14.43 billion.
During the same period, advertising revenues hit P10.13 billion, three percent more than the P9.87 billion reported in 2007.
“We are looking at 1 percent to 5 percent negative growth [in airtime revenue] scenario next year. [But] we’re still finalizing our numbers,” Valdueza said.
Although advertising spending has stayed flat, Vivian Tin, ABS-CBN research and business analysis head, disclosed that the company’s direct sales have been growing.
Direct sales from July to September surged 73 percent to P2.54 billion, boosted by strong results from ABS-CBN Global, prompting Tin to say that the company will be able to weather the crisis in 2009.
The company has allotted P1.6 billion to acquire film rights and bankroll network improvements.
In a related development, ABS-CBN Global Ltd. bought 2,524,488 shares of Series P Common Stock in Multiply, Inc. at a purchase price of $1.9806 per share, a transaction worth $5 million.
ABS-CBN may buy as much as 10 percent of Multiply within two years, according to the stock purchase agreement.
Its Multiply investment “will complement, enhance and upgrade ABS-CBN’s and its subsidiaries’ television and radio broadcasting, content production and distribution, and internet and online businesses through organic and unbiased marketing and promotion of its programs, products and services generated by and through the Multiply website,” ABS-CBN said.
Shares of ABS-CBN was unchanged at P13.25 apiece during Monday’s trading at the Philippine Stock Exchange (PSE).
ABS-CBN is a rival of GMA Network Inc., the Philippines’ leading broadcast company. GMA, which runs the country’s first and the third-ranked TV channels, owns Media Merge Corp., the company managing GMANews.TV

Marian, ugat ng intriga?
(Jun Nardo)

MORE ADVERTISERS CANCELLED THEIR COMMERCIAL PLUG- IN COMMITTMENT IN THE UPCOMING PACQUIAO- DE LA HOYA FIGHT THIS DECEMBER 6.
ACCORDING TO SOURCES, MORE COMMERCIALS IN THE FIGHT SLOT WILL CAUSE VIEWERS TO BECOME UNINTERESTED WITH THE COMMERCIALS. JUST WHAT HAPPENED IN THE LAST FIGHT WITH MARQUEZ EARLY THIS YEAR.
INSTEAD, WHAT THE GMA NETWORK MANAGEMENT MAKES MOVE IS LOWERING ITS COMMERCIAL RATE SO THAT MORE ADVERTISERS WILL ATTRACT THE UPCOMING FIGHT.
MORE VIEWERS PREFERRED TO WATCH IN PAY PER VIEW BASIS THAN AIRING DELAYED TELECAST.

TFC SOARS HIGH IN ADVERTISING RATE IN MIDDLE EAST CLIENTS, PINOY TV HAS NOT REACH ITS POPULARITY AMONG FILIPINOS MIDDLE EAST.
Source: UAE Today
ACCORDING TO OUR SOURCE THAT THE FILIPINO CHANNEL RELEASED ITS COMMERCIAL RATE FOR PRIMETIME BLOCK FOR MIDDLE EAST ADVERTISERS FOR EVERY 10 SECONDS COMMERCIAL ITS WORTH 5,000 UAE DIRHAMS AND OTHER DAYTIME BLOCK IS WORTH 2000 UAE DIRHAMS PER 10 SEC REEL.
WHILE ON THE OTHER HAND, TFC COMPETITOR PINOY TV IS NOT YET RELEASES ANY RATE FOR IT HAS LESS ADVERTISERS WANT TO PLUG IN PRODUCTS IN THEIR STATION SINCE 4 YEARS TIME.
ADVERTISERS IN MIDDLE EAST STRONGLY BELIEVE OF THE CAPABILITY OF TFC IN BRINGING OUT THEIR PRODUCTS TO THE VIEWERS IN LAST 14 YEARS.
TFC MIDDLE EAST HAS 400, 000 SUBSCRIBERS. TFC IS ABS-CBN INTERNATIONAL AFFILIATE.
December 4th, 2008 at 4:15 pm
ABS- CBN BROADCASTING NETWORK COMMERCIAL RATE IS HIGHER THAN ITS COMPETITOR GMA NETWORK
Source: UAE Today
According to Philippine Advertisers Association, the noontime block rate of ABS-CBN Broadcasting Network is costing 120, 000 Pesos per 10 seconds commercial load while GMA Network only rate 80, 000 Pesos per 10 seconds commercial.
The Primetime of ABS-CBN commercial block is worth 160,000 Pesos per 10 seconds while GMA is 120, 000 Pesos.
So, ABS-CBN is expensive than GMA because of its quality shows and at present advertisers do not rely on ratings because of some uncertainty of credibilty conducted by survey company.
The advertisers in the Philippines spent billion of pesos through print ad, radio and television.

Bangladesh, Bhutan, Brunei, Cambodia, Democratic People’s Republic of North Korea, Hong Kong SAR, India, Indonesia, Japan, Laos, Malaysia, Mongolia, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan, Papua New Guinea, People’s Republic of China, the Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam, Australia and New Zealand.
Programmes co-produced between companies whose primary base is not listed in 1 will not be eligible.
All programmes must be broadcasted for the first time between the July 1, 2007 to June 30, 2008 to be eligible for entry. No repeated programmes aired during this period will be eligible. Proof in the form of a published schedule of the transmission time and date will be required.
Submissions
Only duly completed entry form using the Official Entry Form is accepted. Failure to comply may result in disqualification. In addition, each entry must include the following:
1. An English soundtrack or English subtitles or an accompanying script in English if submitted program is in other languages.
2. All required supporting documentation as indicated in the entry form.
3. Payment for the entries. Entries will not be included for judging if payment is not received together with the entry form.
All submissions must be signed by one of the following: President, Chief Executive Officer, Managing Director, Head of Programming or Head of Department. In addition, the form should also include the company stamp or seal.
Composite entries may not be entered into the awards except for the Performance categories. For all other categories, submitted programmes must be complete and entered as original broadcast. Only editing to remove commercial breaks is allowed. Any composite programmes will automatically be disqualified.
For all Performance categories namely Best News Presenter or Anchor (PE060), Best Current Affairs Presenter (PE061), Best Entertainment Presenter (PE062), Best Drama Performance by an Actor (PE063), Best Drama Performance by an Actress (PR064) and Best Comedy Performance by an Actor/Actress (PE065), the following are needed:
1. A maximum of a 5-minute composite must be submitted. All selected items must be from the same programme and episode of which are within the awards qualifying period.
2. All submissions using composite entries must also include, on the same DVD, a completed and unedited programme (within the qualifying period) featuring the submitted presenter/performer.
All programme entries must be in DVD PAL format. A Beta SP will only be required upon successful selection for the final shortlist.
Submissions received after the closing date for the Awards will only be accepted at the judges’ discretion. Deadline for entries is July 18, 2008.
In the event that both the broadcaster and the independent production company enter the same programme, the broadcaster’s entry will take precedence over the entry submitted by the production company.
In the event of duplicate entries, entry fees will not be refund.
All tapes and submitted entry materials will only be kept for one month following the announcement of the winners. Materials can only be returned if the submitting company arranges fully paid return delivery costs.
Judging
The Awards will be judged by a minimum of six regional juries ideally consisting of 5 or more members each. The minimum number of judges required to judge each separate category is three.
No more than four representatives from one country may be on the same jury. No standard jury will include more than one representative from one company.
The judges reserve the rights to request for further information about the programme or performer from the nominator. Failure to meet such requests in sufficient details may result in disqualification.
All voting will be carried out in secret. All ballot forms are independently counted and audited. The ballot forms are retained for a period of 12 months following the announcement of the winners.
Judges may vote for programmes produced for, or submitted by their company or associated company. However, points awarded for that particular judge’s vote will be an average of all the judges’ votes (including their own). The averages will be rounded up or down to the nearest whole number.
No announcement of the winners will be made in advance of the Awards Ceremony. Short listed programmes, performers and companies will be announced in end Nov 2008.
The judges’ decision will be final. Neither the Asian Television Awards nor the judges will enter into any discussion or correspondence regarding the outcome of any decision.

A 4-D film is a marketing term that describes an entertainment presentation system combining a 3-D film with physical effects in the theatre that occur in synchronization with the film. Since the physical effects are expensive to set up, 4-D films are currently only found at special venues, usually in amusement parks.
Some of the effects currently simulated in 4-D films include rain, wind, and vibration. The use of water sprays and air jets is also common. A 4-D film is not shown in a motion simulator, although some seats in 4-D venues vibrate or may move a few inches during the presentation.(www.enwikipeida.org)

It’s the station who is responsible for entering such entry at kung kailangang gastusan, ginagastusan for promotion and etc…!!! previously di mo ba lam na noong nanalo ng terrestial tv of the year ang GMA, ABS-CBN is one of the MAIN SPONSORS OF THAT SAID awards YEAR -it’s 2005 or 2006?
as what I have said in another thread, it’s no doubt that most of your documentaries are good although some are recycled from old ABS documentaries ( or ginaya ang format-what do you think KAPAMILYA
?) pang-award talaga– but the sad fact is it is made for the world to see what is in the Philippines Society, but after that what happened next? nanalo na ng award—- may follow-up para mabigyan ng solusyon ang mga problemamng inilahad? BANTAY-BATA, BANTAY-KALIKASAN,etc.. started from news and current affairs shows but it became a legitimate progam for the welfare of many people and even the government as well…… ang hirap eh, award lang ng award wala namang outputs…. in todays world, journalism or entertainment does not only means to inform or to entertain but to act responsibly to help uplift human suffering, etc….and I see that with ABS, despite of amassing millions of profits we cannot deny the fact that their social responsibility is unbeatable and very sustainable.

sa katunayan, wala kaming nalalaman na gma shows dito sa tagum city. solid kapamilya kami. kahit anong panira nag ikabit niyo sa abs-cbn ay, no doubt they still reign in visayas and mindanao. tingnan niyo ang ONE TRUE LOVE niyo, sabi niyo any potential box office hit ito. pero hindi naman naging box office. alam niyo anong problema sa inyo, puro kayo satsat pero puro lang kayo potentials. kung kulelat ang abs, magkaka-emmy nomination ba sila? sisikat ba ang “love me again” nina piolo at angel? hahakot ba sila ng awards sa anak tv? magsasangasanga ba ang other businesses nila? come to think of, GMA KAPUSO FANATICS, YOU ARE IN THE WRONG TRACK. ITS NOT TO LATE TO SWITCH.

*GMA is the first and only network in the country that has won the prestigious George Peabody Award in 2000(for Investigative Reporting).
*Its news program “Saksi” was awarded the World Gold Medal as Best Newscast in the New York Festivals in 2003, a first for any Philippine news program.
*It was also the first Philippine broadcasting company to have won the coveted Asian Television Award for Terrestial Channel of the Year in 2005.

-I-Witness’ Jay Taruc and his team won the 2008 ABU CASBAA UNICEF Child Rights Award
Out of 69 entries from 10 countries in Asia, the documentary “Batang Kalabaw” (Child Beasts of Burden) was chosen for the prestigious award this year for being “the best television programming on children’s rights produced in the Asia-Pacific region.”
This is the second I-Witness episode that won this award following the episode “Selda Inosente” (Angels in Prison) hosted by Kara David that won in 2003.
The documentary had also previously received a Certificate for Creative Excellence at the 2008 US International Film and Video Festival and the 2008 Catholic Mass Media Awards.
The awarding ceremony was held on November 24 in The Westin Resort in Bali, Indonesia.

In Asian TV Awards, the selection of nominees are not spontaneously done by experts and critics. It is the home network of a tv program that sends the nominations with the corresponding application fee. If you do not send an application for nomination, your TV program will not win an award no matter how good it is. That the rules in Asian TV Awards thats why many legible and credible TV stations do not consider Asian TV Awards as a feat in broadcasting. CNN Asia uses its awards for commercial purposes only and not as quality validation of its shows.
December 26th, 2008 at 1:36 am
you can check the rules and regulations of Asian Television Awards at http://www.onscreenasia.com and see for yourself how this award giving body should not be taken seriously.
