Protestors rally against alleged slur at H&M store
Posted by: iostream @ 2:55 am in: International (2,140 views) October 12th, 2007More than 50 Asian-American individuals rallied outside an H&M department store on the Magnificent Mile to call for the dismissal of a white male employee on allegations of making racist and sexist comments to a female Filipino-American customer. Watch the video clip after the jump.
Filipino American nurse and retired U.S. Air Force Reserve Staff Sergeant, Frannie Richards filed a complaint against the H&M department store at 840 N. Michigan Ave., USA charging that while she was shopping on Sept. 13, a white male employee said, “mail-order bride in the house” and started giggling with another employee.
Her ability to speak English was even mocked by the same employee. When she asked where the fitting room was, the employee said “Can’t you read English? It’s over there – fitting room.” And as she was walking away, he was saying “ching, ching, chong.”
H&M still refused to comment on the complaint but the company officials say that they are actively investigating the incident.

I’m watching this H&M episode:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ONQR6t8Jok&mode=related&search=
I window-shop @ their State St. store & sometimes get a thing or two there but not @ Michigan Ave. when they 1st opened. It is a Swedish company, just like IKEA, but run by Americans. I have shopped a lot of times at their Woodfield Mall store. I never paid any attention to their help coz they all look like space cadets to me and not one worth flirting with. However, I cannot imagine anyone of them ching-chonging a Pinoy customer. I’m so disappointed. Michigan Ave. must have black queens for help. As to Rosie O’Donnell’s ching chong ching comments, I also find that surprising. Most of the time, the major reason whites and blacks get very uncomfortable in the presence of Asians is because Asians, particularly Chinese and Filipinos, can display their opulence w/ ease. They don’t fit the stereotypical high income Americans. Pinoys, for example, will drive a Mercedes and then shop at Marshall’s. Only Jews do that here in the states, generally speaking of course. Wealthy whites and specially blacks would never shop on State St. They would prefer Michigan Ave. State St. doesn’t fit their image but the Mag Mile does becoz of the string of upscale shops there. One last comment on this matter. JEALOUSY. Lots of Asians are not only educated but wealthy as well, not because they have big inheritance or own a big business. They simply save their money. When they make a big purchase say a house or Mercedes, they already have the money to pay for it. In other words, Asians avoid taking risks….generally speaking of course. There was a huge article in the Daily Northwestern (our school paper) today about this since 7 or 8 NU students went down to the Mag Mile, downtown Chicago, to protest. Frannie happens to also be a nurse at Northwestern Hospital in Chicago (it is the biggest & most prestigious hospital in Chicago which is owned by our school). Frannie was supposedly wearing scrubs at the time of the incident. Why should she ignore racist comments and just take it?? Man… if he was talking to me like that while I’m shopping, I would have kicked his ass & he’d be wearing his balls around his neck!!.. It’s time for Asians to speak up, and if not now, when?? It’s inexcusable how she was treated but it is a reflection of a poor hiring choice on H&M’s part, not a reflection of H&M itself. At this particular location, there is a small group of female black lesbian employees who are very aggressive and rude, especially the ones who work the fitting rooms. Corporate America listen: Pay people better wages and you will get better quality employees who are not openly racist or aggressive! Shame on all racist scumbags – whites, blacks, asians, whatever! Let me REMIND people that Americans of Filipino ancestry and Filipinos that are LEGAL resident aliens are fighting in the US Armed Forces everyday so that these ignorant racists can spew their crap!! Also, Fil-Ams are one of the largest contingents of West Coast Marines (after Whites and Hispanics) and YES they do speak and write English perfectly well and can shoot even better… Everyday you get these ignorant people who, just by looking at Asians, think they could not speak a word of English. Little do they know English is the 2nd language in our country. We cannot afford to be timid about these things or these bastards will step all over us and use us as doormats. To those protesting outside the store, let me just inform you that they transferred the racist scumbag to their State Street store and yanked a perfectly nice employee out of their State St. store and moved him to their Mag Mile branch. In disgust, the nice employee quit. So tell some in your group to picket their State St store too.
